Ground Lesson M - Logbook Entries and Certificates Endorsements Schedule: 60mins


Description: Don’t get stuck with your student at a check ride or without the proper endorsements! And, don’t get stuck not retaining the necessary records in the case that the FAA comes knocking!

 

Objective: To familiarize students with logbook entries and certificate endorsement. 

 

Reference: FAR part 61, AC 61-65

 

Elements 

 

1.Required logbook entries for the instruction given (61.189)

  1. The flight instructor must sign the logbook of each person that the instructor has given flight/ground training 

  2. Logbook entries must include:  Date,  Aircraft Identification, Airplane Make and Model, Type of Experience (Solo, PIC, etc.), Total Flight Time, Flight Conditions (Day, Night, Instrument, etc.)

 

2. Required student pilot certification endorsements, including appropriate logbook entries. (61.89)

 

  1. US Citizenship Endorsement: § 49 CFR 1552.3(h

  2. Pre-solo aeronautical knowledge: section 61.87(b)

  3. Pre-solo flight training: section 61.87(c)

  4. Pre-solo flight training at night: section 61.87(c) and (o)

  5. Solo flight (first 90-day period): § 61.87 (n) 

  6. Solo flight (each additional 90-day period): section 61.87(p)

  7. Solo takeoffs and landings at another airport within 25 nm: section 61.93(b)(1)

  8. Initial Solo cross- country flight: § 61.93(c)(1) and 61.93(c)(2)

  9. Solo cross- country flight: § 61.93(c)(3). (make and model aircraft), (aircraft category)

  10. Repeated solo cross-country flights not more than 50 nm from the point of departure: section 61.93(b)

  11. Solo flight in Class B airspace: section 61.95(

  12. Solo flight to, from, or at an airport located in Class B airspace: section 61.95(a) and section 91.131(b)

  13. Aeronautical knowledge test: sections 61.35(a)(1), 61.103(d), and 61.105

  14. Flight proficiency/practical test: sections 61.103(f), 61.107(b), and 61.109

  15. Required for all Practical Tests: section 61.39(a) practice within the last two months . .

 

3.Preparation of a recommendation for a pilot practical test, including appropriate logbook entry for: 

  1. Initial pilot certification 

    1. Taken within the preceding 24 calendar months a knowledge tests appropriate to the certificate sought. 

    2. Accomplished the required aeronautical training for the certificate sought per part 61. 

    3. Hold current third-class medical 

    4. Have required endorsements in the logbook when applicable

      1.  Aeronautical knowledge test: §§ 61.35(a)(1), 61.103(d), and 61.105

      2.  Flight proficiency/practical test: §§ 61.103(f), 61.107(b), and 61.109

    5. Received and logged training within 60 days prior to check ride. (61.39a)

    6. Complete 8710 and reviewed by CFI 

  2. Additional pilot certification 

    1. Commercial license 

      1. Received required training 

      2. Received logbook endorsements

        1. Aeronautical knowledge test: §§ 61.35(a)(1) and 61.123(c)

        2. Flight proficiency/practical test: §§ 61.123(e) and 61.127

  3. Additional aircraft qualification: Must get the required training and get and endorsement. 

    1. High performance endorsements 61.31(f)

    2. Complex plane endorsements (61.31(e)) 

    3. Tailwheel endorsements  61.31(i)

    4. High altitude endorsements   61.31(g)

 

4. Required endorsement of a pilot logbook for the satisfactory completion of the required FAA flight review 

  1. Minimum one hour ground and one hour flight. 

  2. Must satisfy the requirements of section 61.56(A&C). 

 

5. Required flight instructor records 61.189 

  1. A flight instructor must sign the logbook of each person to whom that instructor has given flight training or ground training.

  2. A flight instructor must maintain a record in a logbook or a separate document that contains the following:

    1.  The name of each person whose logbook or student pilot certificate that instructor has endorsed for solo flight privileges, and the date of the endorsement; and

    2. The name of each person that the instructor has endorsed for a knowledge test or practical test and the record shall also indicate the kind of test, the date, and the results.

    3. Each flight instructor must retain the records required by this section for at least 3 years.
